Kids Give Eco-Friendly Holiday Gifts and Learn How to Live More Green All Year
Miami Beach, FL (PRWEB) December 8, 2007 -- Second grade teacher, Lynn de Araujo, of Fisher Island Day School discovered ecosource at the New York International Gift Fair in July. She was tagging along with her sister, who is a retailer, on a summertime buying trip when she met Chuck at the ecosource booth. "When I discovered that ecosource was in South Florida, I asked Chuck if he would ever consider speaking to our students about his products, which are basically planters made from natural plastic alternatives. His Bamboo pots are so different...so interesting, that I knew our kids would be fascinated. Chuck said yes immediately." de Araujo said.
On Monday this week, Chuck Rose of ecosource Home & Garden made is first outreach visit. He delivered a short talk about the importance of recycling and the impact on the earth, complete with recycled bottles, cans and bags. And then he showed the children something different. It was a seemingly ordinary flower pot with an extraordinary story. "These pots are made from Bamboo, but they look and act like plastic." he told his wide-eyed audience. "I told them that plastic takes 400 years or more to biodegrade, while the bamboo pots only last a couple of years and then dissolve back into the earth. That's when the light bulbs started to go on." Ms. de Araujo added, "It was inspiring to see the look of wonder on the faces of the students when they were told that bamboo, just like the perimeter of our playground, was used to make the EcoSource pots!"
The thirty five students ranging from pre-school to fourth grade went on to use the pots to create a greeen-inspired holiday gift planted with flowering bulbs. "Our hope is that this will not only be a beautiful gift for Mom or Grandma, but also a great conversation starter at home to raise awareness." Rose said.
"I jumped at the chance to visit the school and talk to the kids. Since we launched last January, we've been looking for an opportunity and this was perfect." Rose said. "What better time than now to teach kids to connect the dots between personal actions and global impact? This visit was not only great fun, but also very much aligned with the ecosource mission." Chuck went on the say that he was impressed that some of older students understood phrases like 'climate change and global warming' and that he hopes that these children will be good influencers of their families by raising important questions about everyday behaviors. "My customers tell me all the time that it's their kids that are making them think and change their lifestyles...from diet to driving habits to recycling. That little question in the car or around the dinner table can be a powerful thing."
Part of Miami Beach, Fisher Island is a small exclusive community with a population of less than 1000 and accessible only by ferry. Their private day school, which serves residents and provides scholarships to some non-residents, has a commitment to environmental sustainability, painted with low VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints to avoid toxic off-gassing and surrounded by grounds that are moving toward chemical-free maintenance. In addition, the school plants organic vegetables and herbs in Earth Boxes, Solar cooks with a Sun Oven, and composts leftover lunch scraps! The irony was not lost on Rose, who learned that Fisher Island, one of the wealthier communities in the area, does not have its own recycling program. "The Fisher Island Day School is doing a great job of leading by example." Rose said as he left. "Now hopefully the kids can get their parents to start living more green lifestyles. Recycling is a great start, and is almost expected these days. Every community has to start somewhere and I think that this little school might just be the catalyst needed in this community. These kids are smart."
